GATED METAL OXIDE ( GMOS™)

GMOS™ is a breakthrough sensor platform that has revolutionized Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensors by replacing their thermal requirement with an electronic gate bias. GMOS™ will offer a suite of gas sensors with better environmental stability, low power operation and high sensitivity. Traditional MOS sensors operate with a surface temperature of 250-600ºC requiring the use of a heated substrate that is often fragile. High power (0.5-2W) is required to operate the on-chip heaters, limiting the robustness and battery lifetime of heated MOS sensors for portable applications. GMOS™ solves these problems and because of their low power consumption (nW per sensor element) is extremely favorable for wireless integration.

The immediate application for the GMOSTM platform is carbon monoxide (CO) sensing. We have developed the world’s first gated metal-oxide (GMOS™) CO Sensor. The sensor does not require heating and has the potential for high selectivity, sensitivity and specificity to CO. The sensor consumes very low power and showed a CO detection limit as low as 2 ppm (Figure 1) The GMOS™ CO sensor also operates down to –60 ºC, without a heater, which has not been demonstrated in MOS gas sensors yet.
GMOS™ has industrial and commercial applications in monitoring home safety, mines, vehicles, aircraft, office and industrial buildings. We intend to extend the GMOS™ platform to multiple gases in the near future for several military and civilian applications.
